Wikipedia text size
[edit]You said that Wikipedia is 3 GB, but how big is just plain text in it? Maybe when compressed with rar or zip it would make some sense to distribute it as Wikipedia Light Standalone Offline EXE? I once compressed whole terst from 2 CD encyklopaedia and I got 5 MB or so... User:Talthen
Wikipedia has 56 million words, and a lot of pictures. Now, to calculate just text size - assuming an average of 5 character givess:
- 56,000,000 words * 5 characters/word * 1 byte/character / (1024^2 bytes/megabyte) = 267 megabytes.
Now, if I recall correctly, text compresses at a ratio of about 8:1. So that would come down to 33 megabytes. That's still a bit big to download.
Sorry if it took a little while to get back to you. I just moved back to college yesterday, so I was bit busy. →Raul654 01:37, Feb 10, 2004 (UTC)
